Updated October 23, 2026. Checked against Etsy's Listing Image Requirements, last updated October 22, 2026.
On October 22, 2026, Etsy rewrote its Listing Image Requirements: most listings now need at least one unedited photo of the real item. If you sell with mockups, the obvious question is whether they still count. Here is what the policy says, by product type, and what to do about it.
Yes, you can still use mockups on Etsy, but how depends on what you sell. Print-on-demand sellers may use a stock photo mockup as long as the mockup's owner has authorized that use. Handmade and made-by-you listings now need at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, so mockups become extra images, and digital downloads need a preview or excerpt of the actual file next to any mockups.

What Etsy now requires, by what you sell
| What you sell | What Etsy requires | Can mockups be used? |
|---|---|---|
| Print-on-demand (a production partner prints your design on a standard base product) | A stock photo mockup is allowed if its owner has authorized the use | Yes, with permission from the mockup's owner |
| Handmade and made-by-you items | At least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background | Yes, as extra images, never instead of the real photo |
| Customized and made-to-order | Photos of real, finished items you've made before | As extra images next to real examples |
| Digital downloads (printables, templates, planners) | A visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers receive | Yes, next to a preview of the actual file |
| Craft patterns and kits (also recipes, seeds) | At least one real, unedited photo of something made with your product | Not as proof of the finished result |
| AI-edited images | Allowed on your other images if the product is still accurately represented | Never on your required unedited photo |
What changed in Etsy's listing photo rules on October 22, 2026?
Etsy's policy now has two general requirements. Every image must accurately show the item's true color, condition, scale and materials, and for most products you must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Etsy's Seller Handbook defines that photo as one that hasn't been edited or changed in any way.
Outside that one required photo, editing is still allowed: lighting and color fixes, cropping, resizing and replacing the background, as long as the product itself is accurately represented. Editing that hides flaws, changes the product's real color or texture, or creates false expectations is prohibited.
The key detail: the unedited-photo rule applies "for most products," with exceptions by product type. That's where mockups live.
Can you still use mockups on Etsy?
For print-on-demand, yes. Etsy's policy says that if a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product, like a t-shirt or mug, you may use a stock photo mockup, "if the stock photo's owner has authorised its use." That is the only place the new policy mentions mockups directly.
For everything else, mockups aren't banned, but they can't replace the real photo. A mockup is an edited or composited image, so it can sit alongside your unedited photo as an extra image, as long as it still shows the item accurately.
Accuracy applies to every image, including mockups. If a mockup shows a frame, a matte or a color your buyer won't receive, say so clearly in the listing or choose a scene that matches what you ship.
What does "authorized" mean for an Etsy stock photo mockup?
It means whoever owns the mockup scene has given you permission to use the images you make with it in your listings. Check this for every source you use, whether a bought template, a free download or a mockup app: find the license or terms and confirm they cover use in product listings.
For Scaylr users: Scaylr created its template scenes, and its terms authorise you to use the mockups you make with them in your listings (see Terms, section 7.3). Every scene in the mockup library is an original created by Scaylr, not a resold stock photo.
Scaylr's scenes are created digitally, so Etsy's new upload guidance may show you photo tips when you add them. That's expected: what Etsy requires is that your product is shown accurately (the right design, colors, size and finish). If you make the item yourself, add a real photo of it first and use the mockups as extra images.

What should print-on-demand sellers do now?
Check where every mockup came from
Note which source each listing's mockups came from. If you can't find terms that allow listing use for a scene, replace those images.
Match the mockup to the real product
Use a scene showing the same base product your print partner ships: same mug size, same shirt style, same frame or no frame. A mockup of an 11 oz mug on a 15 oz listing is the kind of mismatch the accuracy rule is about.
Make the first photo the clearest one
Etsy's handbook recommends making your first listing photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item. A clean, well-lit product scene works better here than a busy lifestyle shot. Our guide to choosing your Etsy thumbnail covers this in detail.
Updating many listings? Batch it: upload your designs once, pick scenes, download one ZIP (see our guide to creating mockups for Etsy listings).
What should handmade sellers do?
If you make the item yourself, put a real, unedited photo of the actual item against a real background into every listing. Natural light, no filter, no background swap.
After that, mockups and styled scenes still work as extra images, like a print framed on a wall or a mug in a kitchen. They help buyers picture the item at home; the real photo shows what they'll get. Our Etsy listing photos checklist has a full shot list.
What about digital downloads like printable wall art?
Etsy says digital downloads should include a visual preview or excerpt of the content buyers will receive. Items without visuals, like audio files, may use representative imagery instead. For printable wall art, the simplest setup is:
- A plain preview of the artwork itself, shown flat with nothing added, so buyers see exactly what they download. The free Etsy image resizer can fit it onto a 2000 × 2000 or 2700 × 2025 canvas with a background color.
- An image listing the sizes in the download. If you make those files with the free wall art size pack, it exports the common print ratios (2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11 × 14 and ISO A sizes) at 300 DPI, so the sizes you list match the files buyers get.
- Mockups as extra images showing the print framed in a room, to help buyers imagine it on their wall.
If you deliver through a PDF of download links, a screenshot of that page is another honest preview of what the buyer gets. The free digital download PDF maker builds that PDF in your browser.
What are the rules for craft patterns, kits and customized items?
If you sell craft patterns, recipes, seeds or similar items, include at least one real, unedited photo of something made with your product, such as a finished crochet project from your pattern. Etsy says AI-generated images can't be the only images showing the finished result, and its handbook adds that AI-generated functional guides are no longer allowed.
For customized items you make yourself, like custom drawings or hand-monogrammed accessories, Etsy asks for photos of real, finished items you've made in the past. Mockups can add to those, not replace them.
Can you still use AI-edited images on Etsy?
Yes, on your other images, provided the result still accurately represents the product. You can't use AI on the required unedited photo, or to change a product's color, texture, condition or core design. Etsy also suggests noting in your description when photos were edited with AI.
Do the new rules affect listing videos?
The new policy is about listing images. Etsy's separate video rules still let you add up to 2 videos per listing, 3 to 15 seconds long, with no audio. For print-on-demand, a video mockup of your design on the product fills those slots easily. For handmade items, a short clip of the real item is hard to beat.
What happens if your photos don't meet the requirements?
If an item is materially different from its images and the buyer opens a case, Etsy may refund the buyer and you may be responsible for the amount. Etsy may also remove misleading listings, and repeated violations can lead to action up to shop removal. Its handbook says existing listings that fall short need updating and that enforcement will become more proactive over time. There's no published deadline, so start with your best sellers.
