What sizes should printable wall art be?

Printable buyers print at home, at a photo lab or at a copy shop, and then put the print in a frame they already own. What matters is not the exact inches but the shape (the aspect ratio). If your file has the same ratio as their frame, it fills the frame without white gaps or cropped edges. That is why sellers group sizes by ratio instead of making thirty separate files.

Standard printable sizes by ratio (300 DPI)

Two popular sizes are not in the same family: 5 × 7 is not 2:3 (a 2:3 file would be cropped about 7% in a 5 × 7 frame) and 8 × 10 is 4:5, not 3:4. That is why 4:5 and 5:7 get their own files.

Why one file per ratio is enough

All sizes in one ratio have exactly the same shape, so a printer only has to scale the file down. The 2:3 file at 24 × 36 in has 7200 × 10800 pixels; printed at 12 × 18 in it has 600 pixels per inch, printed at 4 × 6 in it has 1800. Scaling down never makes a print blurry — scaling up does. So make each ratio once, at its largest size and 300 DPI, and it covers every smaller size in that ratio. List the sizes each file covers in your listing and in the size guide included in the ZIP.

How to make your size pack

1. Drop your design. Use the largest version you have. The panel shows its pixel size and the biggest size it prints at 300 DPI.
2. Pick the ratios. The five standard ratios are on; tick 5×7 or 8.5×11 if you sell them. Each card has a “largest size” menu if you want to stop at, say, 16 × 24 in.
3. Set the crop. With “Crop to fill”, drag any preview (or use the arrow keys) to choose what stays in frame; “Move all crops together” keeps every size aligned on the same point. “Fit whole design” keeps everything and fills the gap with your border colour.
4. Optional: a white border (like a mat), or a 1/8 in bleed for print shops.
5. Create the ZIP. You get one JPG per ratio, named like design_2x3_24x36in_300dpi.jpg, with the DPI saved in the file, plus Print-size-guide.txt for your buyers. Upload the JPGs (or the ZIP) to your Etsy digital listing.

Is your design big enough?

For 300 DPI at the largest size you need about 7200 × 10800 px (2:3 at 24 × 36 in) or 7016 × 9933 px (A1). Many designs, especially AI art at 1024–2048 px or Canva exports, are much smaller. The tool rates every file: green is 300 DPI or more, amber is 150–299 DPI (fine for large posters seen from a few feet away), red is under 150 DPI. If your design is too small, run it through the free AI Image Upscaler (up to 12,000 px) first, or choose a smaller largest size for that ratio. Common mistakes with printable wall art files

• Stretching instead of cropping. Forcing a 2:3 design into 4:5 by stretching makes circles oval and faces wide. Crop, or fit with a border.
• Only selling 8×10. Buyers with an 18 × 24 or A3 frame skip your listing. Five ratios cover almost every frame.
• Upscaling a small file in the resize step. A 1000 px design saved as “24 × 36 in, 300 DPI” is still blurry. Upscale with AI first, or sell smaller sizes.
• Important details near the edge. Home printers can’t print edge to edge and frames hide about 1/4 in on each side. Keep text and faces away from the outer 3–5%.
• Files over 20 MB. Etsy rejects them. High-quality JPG with “Keep each file under 20 MB” handles this for you.
• Unclear file names. “final_v3.jpg” confuses buyers. Name files by ratio and size so they pick the right one.

What sizes should I include in an Etsy printable wall art listing?

Five files cover almost every standard frame: 2:3 (4×6 up to 24×36 in), 3:4 (6×8 up to 18×24 in), 4:5 (8×10 and 16×20 in), 11×14 in, and ISO A (A5 to A1) for buyers outside the US. Add 5×7 and 8.5×11 in if your buyers ask for them.

Why is one file per ratio enough?

Every size in a ratio has the same shape. A 2:3 file made at 24×36 in and 300 DPI (7200 × 10800 px) prints 4×6, 8×12, 12×18 or 20×30 in without cropping, because a print shop only scales it down. Scaling down keeps it sharp, so the largest size of each ratio covers all the smaller ones.

What resolution should printable wall art be?

300 DPI at the printed size is the standard for sharp prints viewed up close. A 24×36 in poster at 300 DPI is 7200 × 10800 pixels; an 8×10 is 2400 × 3000 pixels. Large posters seen from a distance still look good at 150–200 DPI.

How big can Etsy digital download files be?

Etsy lets you attach up to five files per digital listing, each up to 20 MB. This tool can keep every JPG under 20 MB automatically by lowering the JPG quality slightly, and only lowers the DPI if that is not enough, telling you when it does.

My design is too small for 300 DPI at 24×36. What can I do?
