Digital prints are one of the best products on Etsy: you make the file once, and it can sell hundreds of times with no printing, no stock and no shipping. But "no costs" isn't quite true. Etsy takes several fees from every sale, and if your price doesn't account for them, you can sell a lot and earn surprisingly little.

TL;DR

On an $8 digital print, a US seller keeps about $6.79 after Etsy's listing, transaction and payment processing fees (around 85%), or about $5.59 if the sale came through an Offsite Ad. Price by researching the top listings for your keyword, then use a ladder: single prints, a set of 3 at 15–25% off, and a larger bundle. Sets raise your average order and your margin per sale, because the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing fee are charged per order, not per print.

What fees does Etsy charge on a digital print?

These are Etsy's standard fees for a seller in the United States. Fees differ by country, and some countries add a regulatory operating fee or VAT, so check Etsy's fee page for your location.

FeeAmountWhen it's charged
Listing fee$0.20When you publish, and again each time it sells and renews
Transaction fee6.5% of the sale priceEvery sale
Payment processing (US)3% + $0.25Every order
Offsite Ads15% (12% for shops over $10k a year)Only when the sale comes from an Etsy ad on another site. Optional under $10k a year in sales, mandatory above

How much do you keep from an $8 print?

Here's the maths for a single $8 digital print sold to a US buyer:

If that sale came from an Offsite Ad, add 15% × $8 = $1.20, and you keep about $5.59. That's still a healthy margin, but it shows why very cheap prints ($2–3) barely pay: the fixed $0.45 in listing and processing fees eats a large share.

How do you choose the right price?

  1. Research your keyword. Search the exact phrase a buyer would type ("bauhaus print set", "cocktail wall art printable") and note the prices of the first two rows of results, especially listings with many reviews.
  2. Place yourself in the range. New shops with few reviews often start in the lower middle of the range, then raise prices as reviews come in.
  3. Price for the photos you have. Listings with a full, professional photo set can charge more than listings with one flat preview, because buyers can see what they're getting.
  4. Round to a clean ending. $7.50 or $8 reads better than $7.37. Pick one style and use it across your shop.

Why do bundles and sets earn more?

Because the fixed fees are per order. Sell three prints separately for $8 each and you pay the $0.45 fixed fees three times. Sell them as a $20 set and you pay them once, while the buyer saves $4.

OfferPriceYou keep (US, no ads)Per print
Single print$8$6.79$6.79
Set of 3$20$17.65$5.88
Set of 6$34$30.32$5.05

The per-print amount goes down, but the order is bigger, the buyer gets a finished wall, and one sale does the work of three or six. See our guide to gallery wall mockups for print sets for how to build and photograph them.

Include several sizes in one download

Etsy lets you attach up to 5 files per digital listing, each up to 20 MB. Include the common ratios (2:3, 3:4, 4:5, A-series and 11×14) so one purchase fits most frames. Say so in the listing photos; it's a strong reason to buy.

What about sales tax, VAT and currency conversion?

In many countries and US states, Etsy collects and pays sales tax or VAT on digital purchases for you, and adds it on top of your price at checkout, so it doesn't come out of your margin. If you list in a different currency from your bank account, Etsy charges a 2.5% currency conversion fee on each sale. The simplest fix is to list in the currency your payment account uses. Your own income tax on what you earn is separate, so keep a record of every payout.

When should you raise your prices?

Mind the numbers change

Etsy has changed its fees several times over the years. Recheck the fee page once or twice a year and redo this calculation with your own prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Etsy take from a digital download sale?
For a US seller: $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing. On an $8 print that's $1.21, or about 15%. Offsite Ads add 12–15% when a sale comes from an ad.
Are Etsy Offsite Ads optional?
They're optional for shops that made under $10,000 in the last 12 months (15% fee on sales from ads) and mandatory above that (12% fee).
Should I sell prints as singles or sets?
Both. Singles catch specific searches; sets raise order value and your earnings per order. Price sets 15–25% below the sum of the singles.
How many files can a digital listing have?
Up to 5 files, each up to 20 MB. Use them to include several print sizes and ratios.
