Most wall art is photographed in living rooms and bedrooms. But plenty of buyers are decorating a bathroom or a kitchen, and they search for exactly that: "bathroom wall art", "kitchen prints", "cocktail bar art". If your photos show the print in the room the buyer is decorating, you answer their search before they've even opened the listing.
Room-specific wall art sells best when the photos match the room: kitchen prints in a kitchen, bathroom prints in a bathroom. Pick designs that suit the room (food, drink and typography for kitchens; calm water, botanical and humorous prints for bathrooms), put the room in your title and tags, and use a room mockup as the first or second photo. Mockup templates let you show every design in the right room without a photoshoot.
Why do room-specific photos sell better?
A buyer searching "bathroom wall art" is picturing a bathroom. When your thumbnail shows a print next to a sink, marble or tiles, it matches what's in their head, and they click. A print in a living room might be just as suitable, but the buyer has to imagine the translation. Room-specific photos remove that step.
They also help Etsy match you to the search. Your title and tags carry the keywords, and a listing whose photos and text all say "kitchen" is simply more convincing to a shopper scanning results.
What sells for kitchens and bathrooms?
| Room | Design ideas that fit | Scene that sells it |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Cocktail and coffee prints, food illustrations, recipe and kitchen typography, fruit and herb botanicals | A frame on a counter or island, warm wood, open shelves |
| Home bar / dining | Cocktail recipes, wine and whisky art, vintage drink posters | Dark, moody walls, low warm light |
| Bathroom | Calm seascapes and water, botanical prints, gentle humour and typography, black and white photography | Marble, tiles, a towel or plant in view |
| Any room | Abstracts, line art, travel posters | Show two different rooms to widen the appeal |
The four mockups above come from the Scaylr template library: a white frame in a dark tiled bathroom, a black frame in a marble bathroom, a white frame in a bright kitchen and a white frame on a wooden kitchen island. The same designs could sit in a living room, but here the room tells the story.
A moody cocktail print looks best in a warm, wood-toned kitchen; a light botanical in a bright white one. If the scene and the art clash in colour or mood, the photo looks staged.
How should you title and tag room-specific listings?
- Put the room in the title. "Negroni Cocktail Print, Kitchen Wall Art, Home Bar Decor" tells shoppers and Etsy exactly what it is and where it goes.
- Use room tags. "kitchen wall art", "bathroom decor", "bar cart art", "dining room print". Etsy gives you 13 tags, so use several for rooms.
- Mention the room in the description, along with sizes that suit it. Bathrooms and kitchens often have smaller wall spaces, so highlight 8×10 or A4 and A3.

What sizes should you offer for kitchens and bathrooms?
Kitchen and bathroom walls are usually smaller and broken up by cabinets, tiles and mirrors, so buyers look for smaller prints than for a living room:
- Bathrooms: 5×7, 8×10, A5 and A4 work above a towel rail or toilet; a pair of small prints often looks better than one large one.
- Kitchens: 8×10, 11×14 and A4 or A3 suit a stretch of wall between cabinets or a print leaning on a shelf or counter.
- Digital downloads: include several ratios in one purchase so the buyer can print whichever size fits (Etsy allows up to 5 files per listing).
Show the size in context with a scale photo, so buyers don't order a print that turns out too big for the space above the sink.
Which photos should a room-specific listing have?
- Room hero: the print in the room it's for, art large and clear. This is your thumbnail; see how to win the thumbnail click.
- A second room: show it somewhere else too (a hallway or living room) so it doesn't feel limited.
- Close-up detail of the print quality.
- A set: kitchen and bar prints sell well in pairs and threes. Our print set guide shows how.
- Size guide and what's included.
The full reasoning behind each slot is in the 10-photo checklist.
Create a separate section in your Etsy shop for each room ("Kitchen & Bar", "Bathroom") and use a matching room mockup as the first photo for every listing in it. Your shop page then reads like a curated catalogue, and buyers browsing one print find the rest.
Do you need a real kitchen or bathroom to shoot in?
No. Photographing prints in real bathrooms is awkward (small spaces, mirrors and tricky light), and doing it for every design isn't practical. With mockup templates you choose the room once and generate the photo for every design: load your kitchen and bathroom templates in Scaylr, add all your designs, and each design gets its room photos in one batch. Then decide per listing which room goes first.
If you sell unframed prints or digital downloads, say clearly that the frame in the photo isn't included, in the title, first lines of the description and one of the photos.
