How to compress images for Etsy and Shopify

Why smaller listing photos sell better
Most Etsy and Shopify shoppers browse on their phones, often on mobile data. Heavy photos load slowly, and a slow gallery is an easy reason to scroll past. A 6 MB phone photo can usually drop under 1 MB with no difference anyone can see — and your shop pages, emails and Pinterest pins all load faster for it.
It also helps with platforms that cap file sizes, like email newsletters and marketplace uploads, and it strips hidden location data from phone photos before you share them.
JPG, PNG or WEBP?
- JPG — best for product photos and mockups. Small and accepted everywhere.
- PNG — for designs, logos and anything with a transparent background.
- WEBP — the smallest files for websites like your Shopify store. Not every marketplace accepts WEBP uploads, so use JPG for Etsy.
FAQ
Will compressing my photos make them look worse?
At the default quality (80) most people can’t tell the difference, while the file usually shrinks by 50–80%. Click any result to compare it with the original side by side before you download — and move the slider up if you see a difference.
How does PNG compression work here?
PNGs are shrunk by reducing them to a smart palette of up to 256 colors (the same idea TinyPNG uses). Transparency is kept, so it’s safe for designs and logos. Set quality to 95 or higher for lossless PNG instead.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression happens in your browser on your own device. Your photos never go to a server — the ZIP is built on your computer too.
Does it remove EXIF / location data?
Yes. Re-encoded images don’t carry the original camera data, so GPS location and camera details from phone photos are stripped. If an image is already optimized and we keep the original file, its metadata stays as it was.
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on the shortest side. Use the “Max size” option here, or the Etsy Image Resizer to crop to Etsy’s exact shapes first, then compress.
Is there a limit?
Up to 60 images at a time, as often as you like. It’s free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
