The "first 40 characters" preview is a common rule of thumb sellers use for how much of a title shows before mobile search truncates it — Etsy hasn't published an exact number, so treat it as a guide for writing your most important keywords first, not a guaranteed cutoff.
What the checklist looks for
- Character limits — a title over 140 characters gets cut off by Etsy; a tag over 20 characters is rejected.
- Duplicate tags — the exact same tag twice wastes one of your 13 slots.
- Plural/singular near-duplicates — "cat mug" and "cat mugs" match almost the same searches; two different phrases usually cover more ground.
- A word repeated across many tags — each tag is a separate search phrase, so leaning on the same one or two words across most of your 13 tags covers less than 13 distinct angles would.
- Disallowed characters — Etsy tags only allow letters, numbers and spaces, plus an apostrophe or hyphen inside a word.
- Unused tag slots — every empty slot out of 13 is a search phrase you're not matching at all.
- Very short tags — a one- or two-letter tag rarely matches how people actually search.
Common mistakes
- Leaving tag slots empty. All 13 are free — an unused slot is pure upside left on the table.
- Writing single-word tags. Multi-word phrases ("funny cat mug for coworker" style phrasing, kept under 20 characters) tend to match more specific, less competitive searches than a single broad word.
- Copy-pasting the title into tags verbatim. Tags and titles are indexed differently — 13 genuinely different phrases beat 13 tags that all restate the title.
