Does Etsy crop your listing photo?
Short answer: yes, depending on where it's shown. Etsy's own recommendation is a listing photo of at least 2000 × 2000 px; that same photo then appears in several different-shaped slots — search results, your shop grid, the listing page gallery — and a non-square photo gets cropped differently in each one. A square (1:1) photo is the only shape Etsy's official guidance describes and the only one that's never cropped, wherever it's shown.

Why the "safe zone" matters
The safe zone is the overlap of every crop window shown, centred on your focal point — the part of the photo guaranteed to appear no matter which shape Etsy uses for a given placement. Anything outside it (an edge of the product, a corner of text) is only visible in some crops and missing from others. Sellers who center everything precisely for one shape are often surprised when a different placement crops off a logo or a hand model's fingers — checking the safe zone catches that before the photo goes live.
Common mistakes with listing photos
- Product touching the edge. Zero margin in the original means it's the first thing cropped off in a tighter shape.
- Off-center product in a landscape photo. A product placed left-of-center in a wide photo can end up cut off in a square or portrait crop.
- Text near the border. A watermark, a size label or a shop name near the edge of the frame is exactly what a tighter crop removes first.
- Assuming one shape covers everything. The only shape Etsy's own guidance describes as crop-free everywhere is a square — anything else should be checked, not assumed.
